The Little Fishing House
COMPORTA / HOME / WATCHLIST
Finding smaller and more affordtable options in Comporta is one of my favourite things to do, and this, The Little Fishing House in Carvalhal, near the wild Atlantic shoreline of Comporta, offers just that - a calm, design-led take on the classic fisherman’s dwelling. What was once a simple coastal home is now a thoughtfully restored house, shaped by natural textures, soft light and an easy indoor-outdoor flow that captures the understated rhythm of this region.
Whitewashed walls, timber details and relaxed furnishings create an inviting, slow-living atmosphere, while an intuitive layout balances sociable shared areas with peaceful private corners. The upper-level apartment adds flexibility, ideal for guests who want independence without losing connection to the main house.
Outside, sandy paths lead from sun-drenched terraces to a small dipping pool, open-air shower and shaded dining spaces. The surrounding landscape blends dune grasses, pine forest and the expansive sky that gives Comporta its signature sense of openness.
With the beach a short stroll away and the village close by, the Little Fishing House stands as a quiet, contemporary refuge shaped by place, simplicity and coastal heritage.

The Neighbourhood: Located in one of the most exclusive and desirable areas of the Comporta region, the house is just a 3-minute walk through sand dunes to one of the area’s most stunning sandy beaches. On one side, you have the deep blue Atlantic Ocean, and on the other, the green, flat rice fields, where majestic storks hunt for fish, frogs, and crabs. The nearest beaches include the renowned Sublime Beach Club, Sal, and JNQ, all within easy walking distance of the house. The beach is also popular for surfing, with several surf schools offering lessons for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
Things to know: Be aware too that Comporta is quite seasonal, so outside of the summer months, some restaurants close. That being said, October & Spring are our favourite times to visit without the crowds. As the house is next to the rice paddies, unlike the rest of the year, July – August is a critical time for mosquitoes in Comporta.
